How to Deal with Covetousness

• July 17, 2025 • 127 views

The meeting begins with worship, prayer and a recap of the previous lesson on foundations, trials and taking root before rising. A discussion of earthly comfort turns toward Jesus’ warning in Luke 12 that life does not consist in abundant possessions. The main speaker urges close study of Jesus’ parables and dependence on God’s word and Spirit rather than self-directed assumptions. Reading the surrounding teaching on fear, sparrows, numbered hairs and the Spirit’s help highlights the worth of the person and soul that Jesus is addressing. The central argument examines the inheritance request and the rich man’s plans in Luke 12. Several participants explore why Jesus addressed covetousness instead of acting as an inheritance arbitrator. The discussion then portrays Babylon as a system that shapes desire, careers, cities and religious ambitions. Revelation’s luxury and captivity imagery, the seductive speech in Proverbs 7 and the contrast between drunkenness and the Spirit are connected as warnings about competing influences. First Timothy 6:5-6 brings the focus to godliness with contentment, while Jesus’ temptation illustrates refusing to prove identity on a deceiver’s terms. The final exposition applies this warning to church leadership, anxiety about provision, competition over followers and the temptation to dilute a message for influence or gain. Psalm 2 and spiritual-armor language support the speaker’s call for an assembly that grows in dependence on the Lord. The response prayer asks for covetousness and heart-idols to be surrendered so that God’s life becomes the true inheritance; images of the rich ruler, a treasure-bearing field and possessing the soul are woven together. Communion, evangelism and meeting notices, an offering and music bring the recorded meeting to a clear close.

Prayer Points

  1. 1

Examine my security. Father, show me where possessions or achievement have become the measure of my life; teach me to trust your care.

  2. 2

Form my desires. Write wisdom into my heart and expose the desires that make me vulnerable to flattery or greed.

  3. 3

Give me contentment. Help me follow Christ with contentment and sincerity, rather than using godliness as a means of gain.

  4. 4

Purify our service. Free our community from rivalry and heart-idols; strengthen us to serve faithfully in dependence on you.
