Longevity and Blessings

Be careful of people whose outward blessing conceals inward hostility. Curses can operate inwardly, through spoken words, or through a written pronouncement. The contrast between these forms of cursing and the blessing carried through family relationships makes the condition of the heart, the words of the mouth, and the honoring of God-given authority important. Honor your father and mother and recognize their place in the blessing and longevity God has promised. Receive their instruction with gratitude, remembering how much of ordinary life was learned through them. Parental blessing can be inward, spoken, or written. Dishonor cuts across the order God has established; do not assume that prayer permits that order to be disregarded. Extend honor into marriage. Honor your husband in his place as head, and remember that husbands are also instructed to honor their wives. Bring your conduct into agreement with God’s word rather than expecting the length of your prayers to undo the consequences of dishonor. Prayer can change, but the word of God remains unchanged.
