Beginning with thanksgiving for Jesus’ intercession, the episode centers on 2 John 1:8: watch yourselves so that the work already done is not lost and a full reward is received. The speaker affirms responding to God’s love for its own sake while also arguing that hope of reward sustains demanding growth. This reward is described through a particular teaching about perfection and seeing the Father’s face, with Revelation’s city imagery used to develop the expectation of life in God’s presence. The warning then becomes practical: a ministry or disciple may begin sincerely and still drift when understanding remains incomplete. The speaker urges ongoing learning through Scripture, the Spirit’s instruction and communities that can help a person grow. Images of infancy, young adulthood and eldership are organized into a staged account of spiritual formation. The speaker acknowledges not having attained the final condition being described and appeals to Paul’s continued pursuit in Philippians. The most concrete self-examination concerns ministry motives. When someone leaves a congregation, the speaker asks whether a leader is concerned about that person’s growth or about numbers, income and reputation. If the person is growing where they are, the counsel is to bless them rather than possessively retain them. The closing appeal is to continue toward the prize without abandoning earlier faithful labor, followed by prayer for understanding and strength and an invitation to submit questions.

Persevere faithfully. Lord, keep me attentive so that I do not abandon the good work you have begun in my life.
Remain teachable. Give me humility to learn from Scripture and from people who can help me understand and grow.
Purify my motives. Search my desire for recognition, control or gain, and turn my service toward love.
Bless another’s growth. Teach me to rejoice when someone grows beyond my immediate circle, and to support their good without possessiveness.
