This concluding discussion of the works of the flesh opens with thanksgiving for forgiveness and cleansing through Christ. The teacher explains that examining wrongdoing is useful for recognizing what is hidden in the heart, while the fuller remedy is to learn and practise righteousness. Galatians 5:21 supplies the immediate subjects: envy, murder, drunkenness and revelry, with “such like” extending the examination beyond a closed list. Envy is explored through the habits people acquire in competitive homes and through experiences of lack or abundance. The response is contentment, honest confession and genuine prayer for another person’s good. The teacher distinguishes the desire to improve one’s life from resentment at someone else’s progress. Turning to 1 John, the discussion brings murder into the inward sphere of hatred and recommends sustained study of 1 John and 1 Corinthians 13. The final section moves from literal drunkenness to a devotional analogy: sorrow, success or possessions can so occupy the mind that they displace faithfulness to Christ. The teacher commends being filled with the Spirit and urges celebration that honours God rather than drunken revelry. A closing prayer asks for light to expose darkness and for God’s people to walk in that light.

Love in practice. Father, help me learn righteousness and practise love where old habits have ruled.
Contentment. Lord, expose envy and teach me to rejoice sincerely in another person’s good.
Freedom from hatred. Holy Spirit, purify my heart and form the patient, generous love of Christ in me.
Ordered joy. Fill me with your Spirit so that sorrow, success and celebration remain under your guidance.
