Examine Yourselves

Francis Isibor • January 6, 2025 • 178 views

Francis Isibor directs the dedication period toward deliberate self-examination. Reading 2 Corinthians 13:5-6, he asks believers to test whether their lives remain consistent with faith and to recognize Christ within them. He treats examination as a question of identity and direction: how a person understands righteousness, what occupies the mind and whether conduct reflects belonging to Christ. The purpose is not anxious self-rejection but an intentional assessment of the journey. Romans 8 supplies the main development. The minister reads the contrast between flesh and Spirit and connects it with daily practices: prayer, study, meditation, friendships, entertainment and the setting of the mind. He urges listeners not to remain absorbed by accusing thoughts after failure, but to seek forgiveness and continue in the Word. His comments extend to sickness and an expectation that the Spirit makes the body immortal; these are his theological claims and must not be treated as medical conclusions or a reason to disregard illness. His explicit pastoral qualification is that believers examine themselves without fear or doubt, checking the direction in which their hearts and habits are moving. The closing section joins inward attention with ordinary participation in the world. Believers should not withdraw from work, school, business or existing relationships, because these are places where Christlike life can influence others. They should instead notice what they receive from those environments and guard the heart with Scripture. Psalm 119, Proverbs and Hebrews 2 support a call to retain the Word, pay close attention and avoid unnoticed drift. The final appeal is sustained, diligent hearing and self-assessment rather than casual religious activity, followed by a blessing of peace.
