The Melchizedek Priesthood pt1 - Francis Isibor, Daytime Meditations

• July 27, 2019

Francis Isibor introduces the Melchizedek priesthood by closely considering 1 Peter 2. “Chosen generation,” “royal priesthood” and “holy nation” are read as identity terms for all who are born into God's family. Priesthood is therefore presented as a whole-life calling rather than an occasional activity or a role reserved for a few ministers.

The teaching stresses growth through God's word. Believers are described as newborn members of a priestly family who must learn how to serve, offer acceptable sacrifices and express God's nature. The examples of Aaron's sons and Saul warn against assuming that zeal can replace instruction and obedience. These narratives are used to underline the seriousness of worship.

A sustained ethical emphasis follows: malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy and harmful speech are incompatible with the priestly life described in 1 Peter. Proclaiming God's praises is interpreted as displaying his character, not merely repeating praise phrases. John 4 grounds the call to worship the Father in spirit and truth. The episode concludes with prayer for sincerity, growth and practical learning of the priesthood, while leaving fuller development of the series for later teachings.

Prayer Points

  1. 1

Pray for sincerity and growth in grace and the knowledge of Christ.

  2. 2

Ask for help to learn and live the priesthood rather than claim its title alone.
