The fear of God is a life-forming reverence that brings strength, clarity, and protection from sin. Learn to distinguish it from the tormenting fear that makes a person recoil from God. Priesthood is a nature expressed throughout life, so spiritual responsibility cannot remain dependent on a leader’s prayers or on the atmosphere of a meeting. Know the Father personally, intercede for his people, and welcome the training that produces maturity, discernment, and a character able to stand. Give God attentive honor both privately and when the church gathers, and allow his presence to govern the heart rather than treating holy things casually. God’s commandments reveal his unchanging character and teach the practical meaning of reverence. Do not exploit weakness, oppress another person, take advantage of poverty, or occupy the place of Christ’s lordship in someone else’s life. Honor the elderly, reject occult counsel, and help people hear God through the Scriptures rather than replacing his voice with your own. Remember God’s dealings and the kindness of others instead of allowing present circumstances to erase them. Receive the word deeply and teach it diligently to the next generation, filling ordinary conversation, family life, decisions, and work with God’s judgments. Invest consistently in the formation of your own soul. Search for Christ in the Scriptures, pause over what reveals him, and let the word train your desires, motives, actions, and inward responses. Bring even hidden thoughts and private pleasures under the consciousness of God’s sight, and deliberately turn away from what corrupts the heart. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life that exposes flattery, deception, and the snares of death. Spiritual gifts do not replace the fruit of the Spirit: labor in love, kindness, and the other virtues of Christ so that ministry flows from a transformed life. Ask the Holy Spirit to build a truthful, reverent people who respond to correction and faithfully express God’s presence.
Holy Spirit, teach me the fear of the Lord and keep me from sin.
Help me honor your presence with an attentive, humble heart in private and in the gathered church.
Purify my motives so that the offering of my life is acceptable to you.
Keep me from oppression, exploitation, and replacing your voice in another person’s life.
Write your word in my heart and train my thoughts, desires, decisions, and conduct through it.
Give me diligence to teach your ways to my children and those entrusted to my care.
Expose flattery and deception, and help me respond promptly to your warnings and correction.
Build the fruit of your Spirit in me, especially love that endures offenses and testing.
Build this church into a truthful, reverent people who steward your presence and do your will.
