God’s purpose existed before creation, and choosing humanity in Christ before the foundation of the world establishes the horizon of priesthood. Priesthood is a school of life: God brings forth his Son in human beings so that they represent him to creation. Adam is presented as the first earthly priest, carrying life before there was a temple, pulpit, or religious institution. Creation manifests an already-existing purpose; even human failure is placed within that purpose rather than treated as the event that forced God to invent a new plan. The hope of the gospel therefore reaches beyond religious survival or escape from the earth into restored humanity, the manifestation of sons, and the relief of creation’s groaning. The hope entrusted to the fathers must become clear enough to explain to another person with meekness and fear. Learn to communicate spiritual truth simply, bear witness in ordinary conversation, and impart life to people beyond the church gathering. Bring spiritual life into relationships, work, technology, medicine, and every sphere of human service. The parable of the minas calls for Christ’s reign over every part of life and for the multiplication of what he has deposited in his people. Spiritual leadership must produce others who carry that life; an inward-looking community that only repeats its vocabulary to itself fails to fulfil its priestly responsibility. God’s unconditional love and the revelation of gospel hope supply the inward motivation for holiness and obedience. Stop measuring spiritual worth by possessions, ministerial status, religious performance, or comparison, and allow the light of Christ to form an internally governed life. Believers are begotten by the word of truth as a kind of firstfruits of God’s creatures, a representative beginning of the life he intends to bring forth. Meditate on this purpose, engage the Spirit personally, and make the truth fruitful by sharing it with others. The closing prayers commit coming generations to this life, ask that they serve humanity and build the city of God, and call the community to bring new people into the hope it has received.
Father, flood the eyes of my understanding with light and make your eternal purpose living reality in me.
Bring forth the life of your Son in my humanity and teach me to represent you faithfully.
Equip me to explain the hope of the gospel simply, with meekness and fear.
Reign over every part of my life and multiply your deposit through my service to others.
Free me from performance, comparison, and material measures of spirituality; root my obedience in your love.
Form the inward government of Christ in me and make holiness the fruit of revealed hope.
Draw others into this hope and make our community fruitful in evangelism.
Raise coming generations to engage your life, serve humanity, and build the city of God.
